Montoya’s pole win taken away

Blog Category: Motorsport,Nascar — Blogged by: admin on September 28, 2008 at 12:17 pm

It was a blow to Montoya, 24th in the season points and struggling most of the year to be competitive.

A team spokesperson said Ganassi officials were “evaluating the situation” and would have no comment until today.

Before NASCAR’s announcement, a delighted Montoya said, “It’s huge. There’s times where it’s getting darker and cooling down and you run at the end and all of a sudden you pick up a half a second and you’re up there. But we were in the middle of the pack and the track didn’t really change that much.

Blog Category: Motorsport,Nascar — Blogged by: admin on September 21, 2008 at 5:22 pm

“It was a pretty flawless day for us,” Busch said. “We made it look easy.”

That was win No. 19 this season for Busch in the Nationwide, Trucks and Sprint Cup races. No one is having a season like Busch, even though his 34th-place finish in the Cup race last week dropped him from first to eighth in the points standings.

“I think we’re all tired of hearing about Kyle Busch,” said runner-up Mike Bliss, chuckling.

Bruce McLaughlan: Rossi vs. Hayden provides dream matchup for inaugural USGP

How could it have been better?

• Hayden could have won. Instead Rossi relentlessly closed the lead and made his move on the wounded American rider (broken foot — thanks to the X Games) just past the halfway mark. Until then Hayden had looked unassailable, setting “fast lap” time after time.

• It could have been dry. Racers and fans alike were challenged by the capricious weather.

It was redemption for Dixon, who lost the race and the championship to Dario Franchitti last year at Chicagoland Speedway when he ran out of fuel two turns from the finish. Dixon, who came in with a 30-point lead, wound up winning the title and the $1 million bonus that goes with it by 17 points.

“It’s been an amazing year, starting with marrying my beautiful wife, Emma, and just a great race season,” Dixon said.

Junqueira makes up lot of ground

Blog Category: Motorsport,Nascar — Blogged by: admin on September 2, 2008 at 4:37 am

“Bruno’s over-aggressive move to try and pass during the first lap forced me to hit the wall,” Duno said. “As a result, my rear wing was damaged and some suspension components, too. Unfortunately, I couldn’t maintain my race pace, and the race was over for me early.”

Junqueira remained aggressive throughout the race while driving the No. 18 car for Dale Coyne Racing. He was 14th on lap 22, ninth on lap 48, and then took advantage of a collision between Ryan Hunter-Reay and Will Power on lap 55 to take sixth.

Junqueira ran as high as fifth.

“I’m very pleased with our results today,” Junqueira said. “We didn’t have the fastest car out there, but we did what we could with it. We worked our way up with lots of passes and took every chance we could on the track. I’m very happy with our results, especially after what happened yesterday. The team worked all night repairing the car, so it’s nice to be able to repay them with a good result.”

Junqueira spun and made contact with the wall during qualifying Saturday. The car suffered substantial damage to its right side.

Junqueira’s season’s best finish is sixth at Watkins Glen.

Tough day for Patrick

Danica Patrick ‘s tough times continued on Belle Isle, the track where she finished second a year ago.

Patrick was involved in a crash with Vitor Meira on lap 33 when the cars touched wheels entering turn eight. Meira suffered damage to the right front suspension. Patrick suffered a flat left front tire and fell a lap down.

“It is a very disappointing day for the Motorola team because we were doing so well today,” said Patrick, who settled for 16th.
