Tennis: Safina snags final in German Open

Dina Safina won the German Open in Berlin, defeating Elena Dementieva , 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. She beat three top-10 players along the way.

• Djokovic earns title No. 10: Novak Djokovic won the 10th title of his career, beating Stanislas Wawrinka , 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, at the Rome Masters.

• Mauresmo out of Italian Open:Amelie Mauresmo withdrew from the Italian Open because of a rib injury.

Motor sports: Massa best again at Istanbul

Felipe Massa of Ferrari won his third straight Turkish Grand Prix at Istanbul. McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton was second.

• Indy’s day is a rainout: Qualifying and practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway were canceled for the day because of rain. Qualifying for positions 12-22 for drivers at the May 25 Indianapolis 500 was to be decided Sunday. Now those slots will be added to Saturday’s qualifying.

Hockey:U.S. stumbles against Finland, 3-2

Mikko Koivu scored with less than four minutes remaining to give Finland (4-0) a 3-2 victory at Halifax, Nova Scotia, over the United States at the world championships.

Local/state: U-M opens NCAA softball at home

Michigan will open the NCAA softball tournament Friday at Alumni Field in Ann Arbor.

U-M (48-6) is the No. 4 seed in the 64-team field and will be the host for a four-team regional and face Wright State (33-24) on Friday. Notre Dame 37-20-1) will play Kent State (44-10) in the other first-round game.
