College basketball: Florida center heads to NBA draft

Florida center Marreese Speights declared himself eligible for the NBA draft, though he will not hire an agent and is keeping open the possibility of returning for his junior season.

• More pro chatter: UCLA All-American Kevin Love and teammate Darren Collison will make themselves available for the NBA draft, the Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday night.

Arizona sophomore guard Chase Budinger will explore his chances in the NBA. It’s not known if he will hire an agent. LSU freshman forward Anthony Randolph intends to enter the draft, although he has not hired an agent and is leaving open the possibility of returning to the Tigers for his sophomore year.

Alabama point guard Ronald Steele said he will declare himself eligible for the NBA draft even though he missed last season following three knee operations. Steele won’t hire an agent.

Motor sports: Newman loses 25 NASCAR points

Ryan Newman was penalized by NASCAR because his car failed post-race inspection at Texas Motor Speedway.

Newman was docked 25 points, car owner Roger Penske was docked 25 points and crew chief Roy McCauley was fined $25,000 and placed on probation until the end of the year because the No. 12 Dodge was too high following Newman’s fourth-place run.

• Mayfield leaves Haas CNC Racing: Jeremy Mayfield parted ways with Haas CNC Racing, and Johnny Sauter will drive the No. 70 in Phoenix this weekend.

The team said the split was mutual, but it comes after his 38th-place finish Sunday in Texas. It dropped Mayfield to 36th in the standings.

Local/state: Michigan foils CMU in softball

Samantha Findlay homered to lead host Michigan (13-12) to a 4-3 softball victory over Central Michigan (33-4).

• EMU falls; CMU, Oakland win in baseball: Visiting Saginaw Valley State beat Eastern Michigan, 9-5. Kyle Rhoad and Aaron Powell had two hits for the Eagles. CMU (12-16), at home, beat Illinois-Chicago (18-10), 8-7, in 10 innings. Sean Hoorelbeke was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs for the Chippewas. Oakland (6-12) won at Western Michigan (15-9-1), 4-3.
