With Penske driving, Grand Prix will be a win for Detroit image

DETROIT — It’s only a few days before the revival of the Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix, and Roger Penske is doing two things he does best — attending to details and exhorting the folks doing the work.He does it on foot, helping a new recruit find his boss. He does it over his BlackBerry, usually with the preface that he’s seen something he doesn’t like.

BROOKLYN, Mich. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. is perplexed, frustrated — and still feeling confident.

NASCAR’s most popular driver knows his No. 8 Chevrolet team is good enough to compete for a Nextel Cup championship, so why is it 14th in the points and in danger of missing the Chase for the championship for the second time in three years?

“The last few months, I can’t believe how bad our luck has been because we’ve run up front every week,” Earnhardt said.

“It feels like we’re like your favorite CD, but with a scratch in it.

NORTHVILLE TOWNSHIP — The lure of $2.50 per gallon gasoline wasn’t big enough to create traffic jams Tuesday, but motorists who lined up were surprised by who was providing service with a smile.

“I don’t usually get this kind of service,” said Debbie Eichholtz of Northville, as NASCAR race driver Stephen Leicht washed her windshield and topped off the tank on her minivan.

WATKINS GLEN, N.Y. — Tony Stewart took advantage of a stunning mistake by Jeff Gordon with two laps to go Sunday and won the Centurion Boats at The Glen at Watkins Glen International.

Gordon, who started from the pole and led a race-high 51 laps, seemed to have his 10th road-course victory in hand, but he spun out on his own heading into the first turn with Stewart a couple of car lengths behind and finished ninth.

“I was driving hard,” Gordon said after climbing from his No.

GLADEVILLE, Tenn. — Travis Kvapil led 47 of the final 48 laps to win the NASCAR Trucks Series’ Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday night.

Kvapil beat Ron Hornaday, Jr. by 2.403 seconds for his third win in six races and enabled the 2003 series champion to preserve his chances for a second title.

Series leader Mike Skinner, who led the first 102 laps, was third with David Starr and Todd Bodine rounding out the top five.

“We started the race and the truck was a little bit too tight but I think that was because I was in traffic,” Kvapil said.
