DETROIT — Dave Villwock continued his assault on the unlimited hydroplane record books by winning his sixth Gold Cup on the Detroit River on Sunday afternoon.

Villwock, the dominant driver all weekend, winning all three qualification heats heading into the Gold Cup, had an easy ride to victory. Steve David was second.

For Villwock, this was his third victory in three races this season, bringing his career total to 55. Bill Muncey is the all-time leader with 62 and Chip Hanauer had 61. Hanauer leads all drivers with 11 Gold Cups.

The first attempt to run the Gold Cup was black-flagged when Mike Allen’s U-1 flipped midway down the front straightaway during the third lap. Allen immediately was rescued and was examined by on-site doctors. He was alert and speaking.

Defending champion Jean Theoret failed to make the Gold Cup final.
